Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, is the first overnight camp on the Lemosho Route and sits deep within Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest. The camp is surrounded by towering fig trees, moss-covered trunks, and dense vegetation, creating a cool, green atmosphere that feels alive with birds and forest sounds. This natural environment offers a peaceful and refreshing start to the climb while giving trekkers their first true connection to Kilimanjaro’s wild beauty.

The weather at Mti Mkubwa Camp is generally mild but humid due to the thick forest canopy. Mist and light rain are common, especially in the late afternoon and at night, as moisture rises from the lower slopes. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, while evenings can feel cool, making this camp an ideal transition zone between the warm foothills and the colder alpine regions higher up.

Mti Mkubwa Camp plays an important role in early acclimatization and pacing.
